Mrs. Warren’s 5th graders are putting on their scientist hats as they explore the Law of Conservation of Matter! 🔬✨ Through hands-on activities and thoughtful discussions, students are discovering that matter isn’t created or destroyed—it just changes form.

Mrs. White’s 5th graders are putting their scientist hats on! 🧪⚡ Through hands-on experiments, students are exploring conductors and insulators, testing materials, making predictions, and discovering how thermal energy moves.

Mrs. King’s 1st graders are getting hands-on with measurement during WIN time! 📏🐧 One of their stations has students using penguins as nonstandard units to measure their classmates. Learning is extra fun when math is interactive, engaging, and full of smiles!

We will be CLOSED Monday, January 19th, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Students will return on Tuesday, January 20th, and may begin entering the building at 7:45 a.m. After the tardy bell at 8:10 am, parents must park and sign their child(ren) in at the front office. All visitors must present their IDs to enter the building. This is for the safety of all of our students and staff.

Mrs. Higdon’s kindergarteners enjoyed listening to the story, The Mitten, and brought it to life with a fun, hands-on activity! 🧤📘 Students decorated their own mittens, colored the animals from the story, and created a special craft they can use to retell the story. What a creative way to build comprehension and storytelling skills! 💜

Mrs. Whiteheart’s 4th-grade class jumped back into learning with fun math review games! 🧮🎉 Students practiced skills learned before break by playing Extreme Tic-Tac-Toe and building the Tallest Tower—collaborating, thinking critically, and having a great time while sharpening their math skills!

**ATTENTION 5TH GRADE PARENTS**
This is your child’s last year in elementary school! We know you are very proud of them (we certainly are)! We want to offer you the chance to congratulate them on their accomplishments during their time at Shuford Elementary School. Because there is a limited number of pages, we can only accept one ad per student. The ads are limited to 150 characters, including your child’s name and spaces. If the ad exceeds the character limit, editors reserve the right to edit it as they see fit.

If you would like to commemorate your child’s elementary school years with an ad in the 2025-2026 Yearbook, please fill out the form being sent home and return it with payment of $10.00 (make checks payable to Shuford Elementary) no later than Thursday, February 12th. Because we are working under a deadline to submit the yearbook, no ads will be accepted after this date!

Today marks the beginning of Winter Break, and we want to take a moment to wish you and your family a season filled with rest, joy, and special time together. Students will return to school on Tuesday, January 7th.

We hope the holidays bring moments of laughter, reflection, and connection. Please take care, stay safe, and remain healthy as you enjoy this time away from school.

🏁 Fifth Grade on the Fast Track! 🏁

Our fifth graders had an exciting and educational field trip to the Charlotte Motor Speedway and zMAX Dragway in Concord, NC! Students explored real-world examples of force and motion, seeing firsthand how speed, acceleration, friction, and momentum come to life on the track. 💨

ATTENTION ALL SHUFORD PARENTS 🤒
We are seeing an increase in student illnesses at school. If your child left school sick or is showing symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, sore throat, or persistent coughing, please keep them home to rest and recover. Your child should be symptom-free and unmedicated for 24 hours before returning to school.

Keeping sick students at home helps protect everyone in our school community and allows your child the time they need to feel better. We look forward to seeing everyone who is experiencing sickness, back following Winter Break! 💙🦉

Please remember and plan accordingly for TOMORROW, December 19th, as it will be an early release day for students.
Dismissal procedures will begin at 11:30 am.

Be sure to communicate in advance with your child and their teacher if there are any changes to how your child will get home on this day. All car riders should be picked up by 11:55 am.

This will lead us into our Winter Break, and there will be NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS 🚫 Monday, December 22nd, through January 6th. Students will return on Wednesday, January 7th.

On Monday, December 15th, Shuford Elementary held its annual School Spelling Bee 🐝that included 20 students, two students from each class in grades 3rd through 5th, including their individual class's winner and runner-up. We are so proud of all of this year's participants.

This year's Bee lasted 18 Rounds and ended with the championship word, democracy, which Charlotte King, a 5th-grade student from Mrs. White's class, correctly spelled.

The Top 5 Shuford students who will continue to the District Bee include:
