At the opening of the school year, your child's status from the previous year can be used for the first ten student school days. A new application must be completed and processed each year for the child to qualify for benefits for the current year.

The process requires that you complete the application with all necessary information and return it to your child's school. Applications are officially processed at the Central Administrative Office Child Nutrition Department. You may apply for free or reduced meals based on one or more of several reasons.

One reason for eligibility may be based on household income.  Federal income guidelines are used to compute student eligibility based on information provided in this category. It is necessary to provide accurate information concerning all monthly income and all family members living in the house. Households not providing income may be asked to clarify how they are maintaining their living expenses with no income.

A student may qualify for free or reduced meals if he/she lives in a foster home or group home.

A household may also apply for free or reduced meals as a result of being a food stamp household, or a TANF (Temporary Assistance to Needy Families) household. You must provide the case number in either of the instances.
