Story by Kaitlyn Yang & Natalie Saesee

On April 4th, 2025, DHS hosted their biannual Barbecue Day. This event brings students, staff, and the community together for a fun day full of great food and school spirit. It happens once in the fall and once in the spring; it helps raise money for the school. This time, the school raised approximately $3,900 and sold close to 400 plates; the money raised will go towards school activities.

The fundraiser wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work of volunteering students, who ran a significant portion of the event by organizing orders, serving food, and keeping things running smoothly. Meanwhile, staff members handled the cooking, the money when people bought plates, and making sure that every plate was just right.

Barbeque Day is a chance for students to get service hours, although many students use this time to study and catch up on missing assignments.

When asked what Josh Gordon, a junior, liked about being able to help out, he said, “The service hours are nice.”

Another junior, Gissel Jimenez, volunteered for the first time, and she enjoyed the experience. When also asked why she volunteered, she said, “Because I want to be helpful towards the community.”

One special part of Barbecue Day was the return of two former teachers, Mr. Scronce and Mr. Dixon. They came back to help cook and prepare the barbecue. Their support and the hard work of the staff and students make this fundraiser a success every year.

Barbecue Day is more than just a fundraiser; Barbecue Day is a time for everyone to come together to help support Discovery High School. Whether people bought a plate, volunteered to help out, or just enjoyed the event, it was a great day for the school, and all of the love and support that comes from the community is greatly appreciated.
